IT-230 - Midterm Study Guide

Overview

The Midterm exam will be taken in the SCC Lab environment hosted on the SCC VDI. Each item specifies which host(s) to use for that item.

The professor is not able to access your lab environment. To get credit for completing an item, you must attach a screenshot proving that you completed it. For example, if the item says to create a directory, you must run a command that will show that the directory has been created and take a screenshot of the output. If you need to modify a text file to accomplish an item, include a screenshot of the edited file content. If proof that you accomplished an item is not captured in a screenshot you will NOT get credit for it.

You must also show your work. In this case your work is stored in the Bash history. Run the following commands at the start of each numbered item. These commands will clear your history:

history -c
history -w

Once you have completed each numbered item, run the history command and attach the output as a screenshot. More than one screenshot may be needed if you ran many commands. Do not worry about keeping your history “clean.” Having many extra commands in the history will not harm your grade in any way.

  1. Multiple searches in a single command

    Host
    servera
    1. Perform a search on the /etc/yum.repos.d/rhel-dvd.repo file for any lines that contain baseos (case-insensitive) or begin with gpg
    2. Send the output to the file /tmp/baseos
    3. Screenshot(s) of the command history
  2. Transfer an archive

    Host
    servera (and workstation)
    1. On servera, create a gzip-compressed tar archive of the /etc/profile.d directory. Name the archive profile-config-backup.tar.gz and save it in /home/student/.
    2. Verify the contents of the archive without extracting it.
    3. Using sftp, transfer the file to the /home/student/ directory on the workstation VM. Verify the file arrived successfully.
    4. Screenshot(s) of the command history
  3. Write a Bash script named check_file.sh

    Host
    servera
    1. The script should be located at /home/student/check_file.sh. The script should be executable. The script should use /bin/bash as its interpreter.
    2. The script should accept one or more arguments. The arguments will be either a file or a directory. For each argument, the script should print the argument followed by 'is a file' if the argument is a file; otherwise, the script should print the name of the argument followed by 'is not a file'. Show the entire content of the check_file.sh script.
    3. Run the script as shown below and capture the output in a screenshot
      1. /home/student/check_file.sh /etc /etc/passwd
    4. Screenshot(s) of the command history.
  4. Recurring Task

    Host
    servera
    1. Schedule a task that runs the command touch /etc/motd as root every Monday in August at 10:20 pm.
    2. Screenshot(s) of the command history.
  5. Configure Apache to serve content from /web on servera

    Host
    servera (verify connectivity from workstation)
    1. Configure servera to start Apache when it boots up
    2. Make a /web directory on servera
    3. Create a /web/index.html file with your first and last name in an <h1> tag.
    4. Configure Apache to use /web as the DocumentRoot
    5. Configure SELinux as needed to serve the new DocumentRoot. Ensure any configuration changes will persist after a reboot.
    6. Configure the Firewall as needed to allow Apache to serve web traffic on port 80. Ensure any configuration changes will persist after a reboot.
    7. From workstation, use the curl command to display the index.html content from servera.
    8. Screenshot(s) of the command history.
  6. Configure Apache to serve from port 8484 on serverb

    Host
    serverb (verify connectivity from workstation)
    1. Configure serverb to start Apache when it boots up
    2. Create an index.html file with your first and last name in an <h1> tag.
    3. Configure Apache to listen on port 8484.
    4. Configure SELinux as needed to allow Apache to start and serve web traffic on port 8484. Ensure any configuration changes will persist after a reboot.
    5. Configure the Firewall as needed to allow Apache to serve web traffic on port 8484. Ensure any configuration changes will persist after a reboot.
    6. From workstation, use the curl command to display the index.html content from serverb.
    7. Screenshot(s) of the command history.
  7. Change timezone

    Host
    servera
    1. Change servera to the timezone that covers Chicago, Illinois.
    2. Screenshot(s) of the command history.
  8. Configure Rsyslog to store authpriv err messages in a custom log file

    Host
    servera
    1. Configure rsyslog to write all authpriv facility messages at priority err or higher to /var/log/auth-errs
    2. Use the logger command to send a test message to the authpriv facility with err priority.
    3. Verify the message appears in the new log file.
    4. Screenshot(s) of the command history.
  9. Activate the network-throughput profile for TuneD

    Host
    servera
    1. Configure servera to start tuned when it boots up
    2. Activate the network-throughput profile
    3. Verify it is the active profile
    4. Screenshot(s) of the command history.
