Exercise

Using a New NTP Source Exercise

Task

Point servera at a specific NTP server instead of the default pool, and confirm it synchronizes.

Host
servera
New source
time.google.com
  1. Confirm chrony is installed and running

    rpm -q chrony
    systemctl is-enabled chronyd
    systemctl is-active chronyd
    timedatectl

System clock synchronized: yes and NTP service: active are what you want to see.

  2. Read the current sources

    chronyc sources -v
  3. Replace the pool

Keep a copy first, then change the pool line.

    sudo cp /etc/chrony.conf /etc/chrony.conf.orig
    sudo vim /etc/chrony.conf

Search with /^pool, replace the line with C, and type:

    pool time.google.com iburst
  4. Restart chronyd

chrony reads its configuration at startup.

    sudo systemctl restart chronyd
    systemctl is-active chronyd
  5. Confirm the new source is selected

    chronyc sources -v
    timedatectl
  6. Put the original back

    sudo mv /etc/chrony.conf.orig /etc/chrony.conf
    sudo systemctl restart chronyd
    chronyc sources -v
