Exercise

Activating a Tuning Profile Exercise

Task

Switch servera from its default tuning profile to one built for low-latency networking, then confirm the change took effect and survives a restart.

Host
servera
Target profile
network-latency
Original
virtual-guest
  1. Install tuned and start it

    sudo dnf install -y tuned
    sudo systemctl enable --now tuned
    systemctl is-active tuned
  2. Find the active profile

    tuned-adm active
  3. Read what network-latency changes

    tuned-adm list

Then read the profile itself rather than trusting the one-line summary.

    cat /usr/lib/tuned/profiles/network-latency/tuned.conf
  4. Activate it

    sudo tuned-adm profile network-latency
    tuned-adm active
  5. Verify it took effect

Ask tuned whether the running system actually matches the profile it reports as active.

    tuned-adm verify

So restart the machine. Wait for it to come back, then connect again.

    sudo reboot
    ssh servera

Verify a second time, with nothing left waiting on a restart, and read what tuned recorded.

    tuned-adm verify
    sudo tail -n5 /var/log/tuned/tuned.log
  6. Put the original profile back

    sudo tuned-adm profile virtual-guest
    tuned-adm active
    sudo systemctl disable --now tuned
    sudo dnf remove -y tuned
